Detroit Red Wings training camp comes to Grand Traverse

The Detroit Red Wings have announced a significant shift in their preseason activities, relocating their traditional training camp from Traverse City to Grand Rapids.

 

This move marks a departure from a nearly three-decade tradition of holding the camp in Northern Michigan.

 

General Manager Steve Yzerman acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding this decision, noting that while the team has cherished its time in Traverse City since 1997, evolving circumstances necessitate the change.

 

The upcoming training camp is scheduled for September 18-20 at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, followed by the annual Red & White Game on September 21 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

 

Yzerman explained that the compressed nature of this year's preseason, with a shortened training camp and fewer exhibition games, prompted the team to seek a more efficient approach by remaining closer to home.

 

Both the training camp and the traditional NHL rookie tournament will now take place at Little Caesars Arena and the adjacent BELFOR Training Center.

 

The rookie tournament is set for September 12-15, featuring teams from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

 

This adjustment also reflects a more streamlined camp roster, focusing on players with a realistic chance of making the NHL lineup.

 

Yzerman emphasized that while the team values its experiences in Traverse City, the current circumstances make it more practical to conduct camp activities in Detroit this year.

 

However, he did not rule out the possibility of returning to Traverse City in the future, highlighting the excellent facilities and camaraderie the location has offered over the years.

 

Fans interested in attending the training camp sessions in Traverse City can purchase tickets online starting August 13.

 

Prices range from $20 to $30 per day, offering an opportunity to witness the Red Wings' preparations for the upcoming season.
