Iceman Weekend Brings Racing and a Bike Expo to the Region

A November weekend can mean putting the bicycle away—or making a date with one of northern Michigan’s major cycling gatherings.

The Iceman Cometh Challenge website sets this year’s race for Saturday, November 7, 2026.

For CherryBuzz readers, the weekend reaches across the coverage area, from a Kalkaska start to a Traverse City finish and a Friday expo in Acme.

Understand the main race

The organizer’s course description identifies the start as Kalkaska Airport and the finish as Timber Ridge in Traverse City.

It describes roughly 30 miles using dirt roads, two-tracks, former railroad beds and the Vasa trail.

This is a point-to-point event, which is an important planning detail for riders and anyone meeting them.

A vehicle left at one end does not automatically solve the trip from the other.

Before arranging your day, consult the current organizer instructions for transportation, parking and access rather than assuming a previous year’s arrangements still apply.

If you are supporting a rider, agree on where and how to reconnect afterward.

Save that information somewhere both people can retrieve without searching through an old message thread.

Several races share the weekend

The official race overview also lists the eight-mile Slush Cup, a half-mile Sno-Cone event for children 10 and younger, and the new 1.5-mile PopCycle pedal-bike race.

Read the relevant event’s current eligibility and registration information before selecting an option.

A shorter distance is one useful comparison, but it does not answer every question about suitability, equipment or the course.

Ask the organizer when a detail is unclear and match the decision to the actual rider.

Those attending with children can make their plan around that child’s own event rather than expecting a full day beside the main course.

Friday offers another way to join in

The Ice Cycle Expo page lists Friday, November 6, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Governor’s Hall at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

The organizer describes a gathering of cycling vendors, racers and enthusiasts.

For someone curious about the sport, the expo offers a different focus from watching riders pass along a race route.

Check the current visitor details before traveling, including any entry arrangements the organizer specifies.

If you are comparing equipment, bring the question you want answered rather than feeling you need to make a purchase that day.

Use conversations to clarify what you actually need for the riding you intend to do.

Build a realistic weekend

Choose your main purpose first: racing, supporting someone, visiting the expo or learning more about the event.

That choice makes the rest of the plan easier to organize.

Check the weather near the date and prepare for the conditions you will actually encounter.

Riders should follow the organizer’s rules and preparation guidance; spectators should use designated access and viewing arrangements.

Do not assume that a convenient roadside spot is an approved place to park or gather.

Keep food, transportation and your meeting plan simple enough that a change does not unravel the whole day.

The confirmed dates give local readers a reason to look ahead beyond Halloween.

Start with the official race and expo pages, select the part that fits your interests and confirm the practical instructions before setting off.

kim_87I might go Friday too. It's nice to have a way to take part without racing.

The Friday expo is a great way to get a feel for the weekend without riding. It’s listed for November 6, from 11 a.m. To 7 p.m. At Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

Fair enough, 30 miles in November isn’t for everyone! The Friday expo offers another way to take part without tackling the course.

Maya G.Same here. The 1.5 miles sounds like a fun option for kids ready to ride farther.
