Shop Your Community Day Returns to Traverse City November 7
Downtown purchases can support a shopper-selected nonprofit during the annual local shopping event

Downtown Traverse City is putting local shopping and charitable giving on the same Saturday calendar with Shop Your Community Day on November 7, 2026.

The date appears on the Downtown Traverse City event calendar, while current coverage explains how purchases at participating retailers can direct support to local nonprofits.

For residents beginning holiday shopping, the useful first step is to check which businesses are taking part before building an itinerary.

How the giving works

In its October 31 report, Northern Express describes a 15 percent donation from participating-store purchases, with shoppers choosing among 30 nonprofit organizations.

The reported choices cover animal welfare, arts and culture, education, the environment, recreation, health and social services.

Participation matters: the promotion should not be assumed to apply to every downtown business, every transaction or purchases made on another date.

Ask the retailer how to name your chosen organization at checkout and whether any purchase categories are excluded.

Plan the purchase first

As a practical approach, make a list of items you already intend to buy and set a spending limit before looking for event specials.

A charitable component can help you choose where to shop, but it need not become a reason to buy something you do not want.

For an illustration of the percentage alone, a qualifying $100 purchase would correspond to $15 at the reported rate: $100 multiplied by 0.15.

That example is arithmetic, not a promise about how a merchant handles taxes, gift cards, returns or other transaction details.

Ask about those terms directly if the amount matters to your decision, and keep your receipt so purchase questions can be resolved with the store.

Choose a cause before checkout

Review the current nonprofit choices through the organizer's event page rather than assuming a favorite group is included.

If your preferred organization is listed, note its exact name before entering a busy shop so you can identify it clearly when paying.

Friends shopping together can make their own choices; there is no need to turn a shared outing into a single charitable preference.

The available reporting does not establish that shoppers must make an extra donation in order to take part, so ask the merchant if any checkout request is unclear.

Leave room for downtown logistics

Check individual shop hours and start with the business most important to your plans, especially if you need a specific size, item or service.

For parking, City Opera House's downtown directions page links to the city's parking information and identifies the Hardy and Old Town garages as options.

Use current city information and posted signs for rates and enforcement rather than treating a shopping event as a parking waiver.

If adding lunch or meeting friends, choose a time and location separately from your shopping route, and confirm restaurant hours before promising a stop.

Before Saturday

Recheck the participating-business list and any advertised offer, then confirm donation selection with each retailer before completing a purchase.

If you cannot open the event page while you are out, ask a participating store to show you the current organization list before paying.

Keep the chosen nonprofit's name handy at each stop.

The result can be a straightforward outing built around planned purchases, local storefronts and a cause you have deliberately chosen.
