New Downtown Shops Give Traverse City Fresh Places to Browse
Common Objects and Katakana Boutique add gifts, quilts and clothing to the local shopping mix

Traverse City shoppers have two new stops to put on their next downtown wander: Common Objects, a gift shop and quilt studio in Front Row Centre, and Katakana Boutique on South Cass Street. Both held October openings, giving residents fresh reasons to look beyond their usual shopping circuit.

These are different kinds of stores, which makes them an interesting pairing. One centers objects, artists and a working creative practice; the other adds another clothing destination. You can browse for someone else, try something for yourself, or simply see what the new owners are bringing downtown.

Common Objects: gifts with a studio connection

In an October update about building the shop, Cody Cook-Parrott described stocking books, candles, soaps, quilts and gifts, with Katy helping move furniture and inventory into the space. It is a small-business story with an unusually visible creative process: shelves, paint and products coming together before the doors opened.

The shop is in Front Row Centre at 121 East Front Street. The Ticker confirmed its opening weekend in an October 26 business report. For current shop announcements, start with Common Objects’ own updates rather than treating an opening-party invitation as a permanent schedule.

A useful way to browse a gift shop like this is to start with the recipient rather than a category: someone who reads, someone who keeps a thoughtful home, or someone who appreciates textiles. Ask about the maker and care requirements. A good gift story often begins with those details, and you do not need to arrive with a finished shopping list.

Katakana Boutique is at 219 South Cass Street. Owner Jen Edson-Rife’s new women’s shop carries brands including Planet, Aleeza Paris, Risen Jeans and Unpublished Jeans, according to the same October 26 report. Reported hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; check before a special trip.

Rather than guessing at a new store’s style from its name, give yourself time to handle fabrics and try pieces on. Bring a layer or shoes you already own if you are shopping for a particular outfit. That makes it easier to tell whether a purchase will work in your everyday wardrobe.

Make the visit easy

Before buying clothing as a gift, ask about exchanges, gift receipts and any deadline that might fall before the recipient opens it. For home goods, check dimensions and whether a piece needs special cleaning. These are shopping suggestions, not claims about either store’s policies or services.

If you plan to browse both locations, choose parking for the whole outing. The city’s downtown parking guide identifies street spaces, lots and the Hardy and Old Town structures; posted rates and time limits should guide your choice.

For anyone visiting with a limited time window, choose your priority store first and treat the second as a bonus. Shopping is easier when the afternoon leaves room to look carefully rather than rushing a purchase.

The attraction here is discovery. New shops give a familiar downtown another reason to explore on foot and a chance to meet the people choosing what goes on the shelves. Start with one stop, leave room for a second, and ask questions before assuming stock, sizes or special services will be available. Reporting checked October 30, 2026.
