Top Outdoor Activities in Grand Traverse |
A local guide to hiking, cycling, paddling, beaches, fishing, golf, and seasonal winter adventures |

Grand Traverse outdoor activities can fill a quiet morning, an active weekend, or an entire vacation.
For Cherry Buzz's editorial shortlist, start with hiking, cycling, paddling, beach outings, fishing, golf, and winter sports.
The best fit depends on the season, your experience, and how much time you want to spend outside.
This guide covers Traverse City and the surrounding Grand Traverse area, using official information checked October 1, 2026.
1. Walk or hike beside lakes and rivers
The four-mile Boardman Lake Loop circles Boardman Lake just south of downtown Traverse City.
TART Trails describes a mix of paved surfaces, boardwalks, and gravel, with wooded stretches and river crossings.
For a more nature-focused outing, Brown Bridge Quiet Area southeast of Traverse City offers trails and overlooks along the Boardman River.
The city limits its trails to hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing according to the season and conditions.
Our suggestion: choose Boardman Lake for an outing close to town, or Brown Bridge when you want a woodland walk.

2. Explore by bicycle
The 17-mile Leelanau Trail provides a paved, off-road connection between Traverse City and Suttons Bay.
You can choose a shorter out-and-back ride instead of committing to the entire route.
For mountain biking and other trail activities, the Vasa Pathway has loops with different distances and levels of challenge.
Check the current trail map, conditions, and permitted uses before setting out.
TART notes that hunting is allowed on the Vasa's state forest land and advises bright clothing during hunting seasons.

3. Paddle local waterways
Kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are among the water activities listed by Traverse City Tourism.
The Grand Traverse Conservation District also identifies paddling on the Boardman River at Brown Bridge.
Cherry Buzz suggests choosing a route with an outfitter's help if you are unfamiliar with the waterway.
Ask about launch access, takeout arrangements, seasonal rentals, and conditions appropriate to your experience.
Treat an October paddle as a separate planning decision from a summer beach outing.

4. Spend time on Grand Traverse Bay
Clinch Park offers a downtown beach on West Grand Traverse Bay.
The city's listing also identifies concessions, a splash pad, and the municipal marina, though seasonal amenities should be checked before visiting.
Our suggestion: make a shoreline walk or picnic the core of an autumn outing, with swimming reserved for suitable conditions.
Choose activities around the weather and posted beach notices.

5. Plan a fishing outing
Traverse City Tourism's fishing directory includes fishing locations, guides and charters, boat rentals, and tackle shops.
That makes it a useful starting point whether you want local advice or a guided trip.
Before reserving, ask about the fishing location, target species, equipment, trip length, and weather cancellation terms.
Check current licensing and fishing rules for the water you intend to visit.

6. Book a round of golf
Grand Traverse Resort and Spa offers The Bear, The Wolverine, and Spruce Run.
Use its official tee-time information to compare course options, current rates, and availability.
Our planning suggestion is to tell the golf staff your experience level and available time before selecting a course.
Ask about equipment rentals and seasonal operating dates if needed.

7. Return for winter sports
The Vasa Pathway supports cross-country skiing when conditions permit.
Mt. Holiday's snow-sports page currently says hill activities are closed and will return for the 2026–27 winter season.
Check opening announcements, trail reports, and booking requirements before planning a winter visit.
